Naruto Jinchūriki Forms

Naruto Uzumaki is a Jinchūriki of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. When Naruto taps into the demon fox's chakra, it increases every physical aspect of his body. Increased healing, near-limitless chakra, an almost impenetrable shield, and great stamina. Naruto has unique access to the demon fox's chakra due to the seal the Fourth Hokage placed on him. The seal split the demon fox's chakra in two halves, the Yin chakra made it inaccessible to Naruto, but the Yang chakra allowed Naruto to access it.

Jinchūriki Form

By simply tapping into the demon fox's chakra, Naruto's blue eyes turn red, his pupils become slitted, his nails and incisors grow long and sharp, and his whisker marks become more feral. Depending on how much chakra is unleashed, the red chakra could glow around his body in an untamed way. Naruto first reached this form when Sasuke Uchiha was thought to be killed by Haku, causing the pure rage to take over allowing the demon fox's chakra to leak out of the seal.

Even though this is the weakest state of his Jinchūriki forms, it is still a deadly foe as it increases his physical strength and healing well above most shinobi, and increasing his speed to such high levels that nothing short of a fully matured Sharingan is able to track his movements. Until special training from Jiraiya, Naruto could only reach this state through rage or if his life was in imminent danger, but after having a inner talk with the demon fox, he is able to tap into the demon fox's chakra on his own, or by simply telling the demon fox to give him some power.

[edit] One-Tailed Transformation

During Naruto's battle with Sasuke at the Valley of the End, when Naruto was at the mercy of Sasuke, the demon fox told Naruto that he should be grateful to it and gave him more chakra. The amount of chakra is so great that it leaks out of his body in a denser state. All the physical traits of the basic Jinchūriki form are present and slightly altered, including a black ring appearing around his eyes, longer nails and canines, and more beserk looking eyes, with one major bonus; the red chakra becomes a complete shield around his body, in the shape of a fox, complete with long ears and a tail, known as the demon fox's cloak or shroud.

In his one-tailed transformation, Naruto fights more like a beast. Instead of using his fists, he instead uses his sharpened claws. While he can stand on his own two feet, he can move at greater speeds on all fours. But his most powerful weapon is the chakra itself. The bubbling chakra appears to have a mind of its own: when a strike that was meant for Sasuke missed, the chakra itself stretched off Naruto's arm and hit Sasuke before he could react. Since the chakra has a mind of its own, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to predict Naruto's movements, as Sasuke was able to see Naruto perfectly, but couldn't predict what the chakra would do with the Sharingan. The chakra can stretch far from the body, as Naruto was shown using his "arms" to attack Sasuke from great distances, at one point being on an opposite side of the valley, and still attacking him with the chakra arms. The shield around his body appears to be impenetrable, comparable to Gaara's Ultimate Absolute Defense: Shield of Shukaku.

[edit] Two-Tailed Transformation

After catching the Akatsuki member, Deidara, and beating what he thought was Deidara to pieces only to realize he had been attacking a substitution, his anger at losing Deidara and not being able to avenge Gaara's death caused Naruto to slip into his two-tailed transformtion. His physical characteristics match the first two forms, but his red eyes and incisors grow larger, and his lips get a black outline, similar to fox gums. The chakra shield's only difference between the one-tailed transformation and the two-tailed is the extra chakra tail that has grown.

Naruto's three-tailed face. Note: There is little difference between the two and three tailed facial characteristics.

While in this state, Naruto is still in control of his body, though to what extent is unknown. In the anime, he punched a tree, destroying it and a long line of trees behind it, and later he attempted to attack Kakashi Hatake, who later tried to calm him down, and possibly tried to stop him from finding Deidara. The amount of chakra produced by the two-tailed transformation was so great, that even Naruto's shadow clones doubled over in pain from the chakra.

[edit] Three-Tailed Transformation

After Orochimaru revealed himself to Team Yamato and baited Naruto with news of Sasuke, Naruto went on a rage and first attacked him in his one-tailed state. When that failed, along with further baiting from Orochimaru, Naruto skipped the two-tailed transformation all together, and went straight into his three-tailed transformation. The three-tailed state looks exactly like the two-tailed, again the only difference being the number of tails. His eyes become similar to the four-tailed transformation, but can return to normal.

The amount of chakra produced from this form is devastating. The very air around Naruto begins to hurt. This is the strongest form Naruto can reach and control. With the standard chakra shield's protection and attack power, a simple roar has the power to create a devastating sphere of destruction.

[edit] Four-Tailed Transformation

When Orochimaru was fighting the three-tailed transformation, Naruto turned to the demon fox in desperation and anger, and slipped into the demon fox's grasp. The demon fox's chakra began to burn its way through Naruto's body, destroying his skin, and rapidly healing it at the same time, eventually covering his entire body in a mix between the demon fox's chakra and his own blood. Everything from his face to his chakra tails became completely solid, his eyes losing its characteristics and became empty glowing circles surrounded by a black mask made of chakra.

The four-tailed Naruto charging for an attack.
The four-tailed Naruto charging for an attack.

In this state, in effect, Naruto takes the place of the demon fox inside the cage. The demon fox has complete control over Naruto's body, making it a mere skeleton for the fox's chakra, and every living thing in its way a target. The four-tailed transformation has all the benefits of the other tails, with upgrades. With a simple wave of his hand, it can send a shockwave of destruction for miles. The chakra shield, while being solid, still completely protects Naruto's body, and is so hot that it can burn the skin on contact. If Naruto is hit, the chakra itself can form another body, and strike back almost instantly. The demon fox also has the ability to charge a concentrated ball of chakra, consume it, and then fire it with such a force that it could destroy three Rashomon gates without losing strength. Finally its chakra shield's defensive power is so great that it is impregnable to any form of attack. Even Orochimaru's legendary Kusanagi couldn't even break the exterior shell of the demon fox's chakra, only bending it slightly.

In the end, despite it being Naruto's strongest Jinchūriki form revealed so far, the four-tailed transformation is Naruto's greatest downfall. Because the demon fox's chakra is constantly destroying and creating new cells, it also shortens Naruto's life, similar to Tsunade's Creation Rebirth. Also, because the demon fox has complete control, Naruto will attack anything that moves, including his friends. This discourages Naruto from using this state more than the fact that it shortens his life. Naruto first slipped into this state when he was training with Jiraiya, because he used the toadkey to "twist" the seal the Fourth Hokage placed on Naruto. A small "twist" of the seal unleashed the four-tailed transformation and almost killed Jiraiya.

[edit] Jinchūriki Chakra Control

In the event of the demon fox manifesting, Naruto's sensei, Jiraiya, gave Kakashi a special written seal that is to be placed on Naruto's body. This seal suppresses the demon fox's chakra and restores Naruto to his normal self. In addition, Yamato has demonstrated a technique that reverses Naruto's demon fox transformation, enhanced greatly by the First Hokage's necklace that Naruto wears. Naruto, in the anime, has shown that with enough will power, he is able to suppress the demon fox's chakra from taking over. However, the important factor to this is that the demon fox's chakra was responding to the vessel of its residual chakra so it is unknown if Naruto could use his willpower to suppress the demon fox's chakra if it forced its way in a similar fashion as his first four-tailed transformation.

Sasuke has also demonstrated the ability to forcefully suppress the demon fox's chakra. To parallel the demon fox's apparent connection with the Uchihas, Itachi Uchiha of Akatsuki was originally assigned to capture it as part of the organization's goal of obtaining all the Tailed Beasts. This task was later given to Pein.

Sora

Sora is a monk in the Naruto Series. His name means "sky" in Japanese. Sora also has the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's chakra which was enhanced in him genetically which he has one arm of a Jinchuriki. Sora wants revenge on Asuma for killing his father.

Background

Not much is known about his childhood, only that one day he went berserk and wrecked the Temple of Fire, a place otherwise believed to be an indestructable fortress. Afterwards, he was loathed by some of the monks of the temple, and soon began receiving the same treatment as a Jinchūriki.

He wanted to become part of the Twelve Ninja Guardians. He hates himself because of his powers and gets angry when people stare at him. When they first meet he hates Naruto but then they become friends. Sora does not like getting help from people, especially ninja. He did not even want Team Yamato to come.

[edit] Part II

[edit] Fire Temple Filler Arc

This arc begins due to a misunderstanding, Naruto Uzumaki fights one of the monks-in-training from the Fire Temple, Sora, who also uses wind chakra based techniques. After the confusion, the monks and Team Kakashi travel to the Fire Temple

The temple monks explain that the tombs hold the loyal bodyguards of Fire Country's feudal lord. Naruto observes Sora sparring with other monks and becomes offended upon realizing he is holding back. Naruto challenges Sora, but just as the matter is about to get serious, another monk stops him. Naruto realizes Sora is despised by the other monks as he was himself and wishes to befriend him. Naruto visits Sora again and observes him practicing his wind jutsu in earnest, hoping to get strong enough to avenge his father. They later return to the temple to receive news that another tomb has been robbed.

They are later ambushed by a group of enemy shinobi and Sora, unwilling to look for Naruto, goes off on his own. Sora then hits upon the enemy leader, Furido, and it is revealed that he is the group's target. Sora then starts to question Furido, but he does not answer. Instead he just sits down and roasts some potatoes. Sora gets angry and his chakra starts to get more powerful. Furido taunts Sora until Sora unleashes his true powers, before informing him that he is planning to use the four corpses to save the Land of Fire. After an explosion Sora wakes up only to find out that Furido had vanished, only leaving him a clue that he knows his father and that Sora resembles him.

Sora then is assigned to go to Konohagakure with Team Yamato to replace Sai because of Sai's injuries.

Naruto tries to show Sora around Konoha but Sora goes his own way. Sora's insults precipitate a brawl with Kiba Inuzuka and Choji Akimichi, and Naruto and Rock Lee soon join in. Later Asuma Sarutobi tells Sora he knew Sora's father, who is revealed as one of the Guardians involved in the coup attempt. He also shows Sora his chakra blade attack and then volunteers to to help train Sora and Naruto.

Asuma supervises Naruto and Sora's wind chakra training, and notices that Sora, like Naruto, has very powerful chakra. Later, Asuma gives Sora a claw made from the same materials as his chakra blades. It is revealed that Asuma killed Sora's father Kazuma, who had planned to kill the Hokage. Furido then approaches Sora, telling him that Asuma is responsible for his father's death and passing him two "king" pieces from a Shogi set for Asuma. Shocked by this discovery he goes back to training distressed. Then Naruto approaches a furious Sora in the training grounds, who easily throws a chakra-powered kunai through a tree and destroys the stone behind it.

Later on Sora tries to look for Asuma and follows him to Danzo's interrogation. There he found out that Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane dislike Sora and don't welcome him in the village and plan to kill him. Before Tsunade can make her decision on what to do with Sora, he is caught by ANBU members hiding in the ceiling. Enraged, he yells at Tsunade asking her why would she kill him. Are his powers really that hated? He then goes on by saying that they are just like the fire temple monks. He looks at Yamato asking him, "are these what you call comrades?" He then changes his view towards Asuma and confronts him, accusing him of killing his father, which Asuma confirms. Sora attacks Asuma, his arm once again assuming a demonic form. While he blows Asuma outside, he is unable to maintain it for long, and falters. He is attacked by an unknown individual (presumed to be a Root shinobi), but Naruto shields him from the shuriken, being injured in the process. Sora then approaches Furido, who says that he must kill Asuma and Tsunade to avenge his father and consolidate the "two kings" (the Feudal Lord and the Hokage) into a single leader by eliminating the Hokage.

Later that night, Naruto catches Sora going after Tsunade. Sora retreats as Shizune and a few other ninja arrive, and Naruto pursues him. At that moment, a mysterious lightning storm strikes, cutting off power to the entire village. Meanwhile, Naruto chases Sora for attempting to kill Tsunade. Asuma, commanded by Tsunade to follow Sora and Naruto, finally catches up to them. Asuma realizes that the four invaders plan to annihilate the entire village using the lightning powers of the corpses that they stole. The revelation shocks Sora. As Asuma leaves to help hold off the attackers, he instructs Naruto to continue to pursue Sora.

Later on Furido tells Sora that when The Nine Tailed Fox rampaged around Konoha, The Fourth Hokage sealed the beast with in Naruto Uzumaki and the nine tails chakra that had slipped out when it rampaged was sealed it into Sora by Kazuma and the fire temple. He, Furido, then proceeds to use the Five Elements Unseal to release all of the demon fox's power. Sora grows a demon fox cloak similar to Naruto's, except that he has three spikes on each side of his face.

Like Naruto, he grows tails which increase in number the longer he keeps himself in the demon fox cloak state. If nine tails grow, he will turn into a real demon fox.

Later, as Asuma and Naruto arrive, it is revealed that Furido is actually Kazuma, Sora's father.

[edit] Abilities

  • Element: Wind

Sora is a wind natured chakra user like Naruto. He is able to manipulate wind into chakra infused wind blades of energy capable of cutting through most material including rock. He wields a tri-bladed death claw that he learns to infuse with chakra after learning the jutsu from Asuma Sarutobi. Asuma gives him a new blade after his old one is destroyed in a fight with Naruto. Sora also uses Taijutsu known only to the monks of the Fire Temple.

Sora's father Kazuma spliced his cellular make-up with excess chakra of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox to create a pseudo-jinchūriki. Sora is capable, though unwillingly it seems, to transform into a miniature kyūbi much like Naruto. In this form, he has all the power and resistance to injury and attack of an unsealed kyūbi.

[edit] Trivia

  • Sora is introduced as a "filler" character in Naruto: Shippūden, and thus doesn't make an appearance in the manga.

Sora Jinchūriki Forms

When the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attacked Konohagakure, it left a lot of chakra in the air, which was later gathered by Kazuma, one of the 12 Guard Ninjas of Fire, who wanted to create a Jinchūriki weapon for Konoha. After five years of experimentation, he finally was able to implant the demon fox's chakra into the cells of his son, Sora. Because Sora does not have the Tailed Beast sealed within him, but only has his cells combined with its chakra, he is refered to as a Pseudo-Jinchūriki.

Even though Sora does not have the actual demon fox inside of him, the chakra implanted within him can react to the demon fox within Naruto Uzumaki as it somehow called out to him when Naruto was about to be killed by Fuka. Unlike Naruto, he doesn't have as much chakra as the demon fox would usually generate when Naruto is in his demon fox cloak, nor can he control it. Instead, he becomes overwhelmed by the fox chakra's destructive instinct; when in his fox cloak, Sora threatens to kill anyone who stands in his way.

Jinchūriki Form

Unlike Naruto, who has a stable and controlled combination of his own chakra and the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's chakra (because of the Fourth Hokage's seal), Sora can't control the chakra added to his cells. To stabilize this, his father applied a sealing jutsu on Sora several times to keep him and the chakra under control.

When Sora feels frustrated or is in a state of great anger, the chakra can change his right arm into a demonic form. It would seem that he is not aware at all about the change of his arm, and has first noticed it when his father told him.

[edit] One-Tailed Transformation

Sora in his One-Tailed Trasnformation
Sora in his One-Tailed Trasnformation

When his father would stop applying the seals or when he completely releases it, he uses the Five Elements Unseal, which the chakra can run loose and slowly take over Sora's body.

Like Naruto, when the chakra is released from Sora in large amounts, a demon fox cloak will form around Sora, initially and slowly he will begin to grow a chakra tail. In addition, like with Naruto, during this transformation, Sora's hair becomes spiked, his canines longer and sharper, and his eyes turned to slitted fox-like eyes. Also in this form, the chakra surrounding him damages the people around him. In addition, he is also able to inflicate a painful burn to anyone that comes into contact with the chakra for too long.

Due to being a Pseudo-Jinchūriki, Sora has some different features from Naruto in a similar state (besides the arm) including spiked projections growing from his cheeks.

At first when the chakra was taking over his body and he was in pain, and could slightly control himself, but slowly he began giving in to the urges of the demon fox's chakra, and gains a will to kill and destroy everything, a problem Naruto never displayed until the fourth tail emerged.

[edit] Three-Tailed Transformation

Sora in his Three-Tailed Transformation
Sora in his Three-Tailed Transformation

Skipping the two-tailed form, Sora grows three chakra tails. Like Naruto, he begins crouching on all fours, however unlike Naruto, he has now given in to the demon fox chakra completely, and will only growl and roar, something Naruto never really displayed during his Three-Tailed Transformation, where he seems to still be in slight control.

Like Naruto has in this form, Sora will also gain the ability to blow his opponent away using a simple roar of chakra, and has also displayed he ability to use the extended chakra arm.

[edit] Four-Tailed Transformation

Sora in his Four-Tailed Transformation
Sora in his Four-Tailed Transformation

Releasing even more chakra than before, even from his mouth, and growing a fourth chakra tail, Sora's skin begins to slowly peel off and in an instant explosion of chakra is he completly covered in the demon fox cloak, resembling a miniature demon fox. With Sora, the demon fox's cloak takes on a yellow, orange colour, while Naruto's cloak is more red.

Also, Sora's legs are thinner and longer, and the spikes sprouting from his face in his earlier transformations is visible in the cloak, alongside his spiked hair, being slightly bigger than when Naruto transformed. In this form, he has absolutely no control of himself.

He possesses the same powers like Naruto in his Four-Tailed Transformation, but his attacks, like the Four-Tailed Strong Ball, seems to be weaker than Naruto's. It has been speculated by Yamato, that Sora's body cannot handle the large amount of chakra.

Kira Hachi

Kira Hachi (ラービー, kirābī; Literally meaning "Killer Bee") is a ninja from Kumogakure and the Jinchūriki of the Eight-Tailed Beast. He is a black, musclebound Cloud shinobi, who appears to dislike light. On his right shoulder, he has a tattoo that says "iron"; and on his left cheek, he has a tattoo of a bull's horn. He also carries seven swords.

Personality

It seems that he demands respect from those under him and asks to be called "Mr. Jinchūriki" or "Mr. Eight-Tails". He also appears willing to speak in song more specifically in rap style, even when confronted with potential threats. He will even stop in a middle of a fight to write whatever rhymes come to him.

[edit] Part II

[edit] Hunt for the Eight-Tails

Team Hawk, after discovering that the Eight-Tails was training in the Unraikyo Mountains traveled up the mountain. He revealed himself after appearing to contain his Tailed Beast. When Suigetsu attacked him, he easily overpowered him, and uses Suigetsu's sword to defeat Jugo afterwards. He later shows an unorthadox sword style where he manages to hold all seven of his swords in a rather awkward pose, this is deceiving as his seven sword style is extremely formidable and he even fatally wounds Sasuke Uchiha.

As he moves in to finish Sasuke, Suigetsu comes to save him while Jugo attacks from behind. Even with the three fighting him at once Kira appears unfazed by their attacks. When the three do a triple damaging attack to him, he somehow moves extremely quickly to a same position relatively far away. Finally getting annoyed with Team Hawk, Kira decides to go home and have some whiskey, but Karin senses his location. As Sasuke is rocketed to his position, Kira announces he will unveil the "Eight One".

[edit] Abilities

The Eight-Tails Jinchūriki appears to be able to fully transform into his Tailed Beast with great ease, similar to his fellow Cloud shinobi, Yugito Nii and is clearly confident of his own fighting style.

His physical strength and taijutsu skill is immense. He is easily capable of disarming a skilled opponent with his bare hands, and proficiently wielded Suigetsu's giant sword seconds after picking it up. His specialty, however, is wielding his seven swords, which he does in an odd way, holding them in between the joints of his arms and left leg, his stomach and the left side of his neck. As awkward as it appears, he is quite skilled with this, spinning around like a buzzsaw and overwhelming his opponent with all of the varying swings. He is also capable of seamlessly releasing some of the swords to fight in a more conventional style, giving him great versatility. When he does find an opening, he can impale his opponent with most of his swords at once. While fighting with this style, he was effortlessly able to defeat Sasuke, and would have killed him if not for Karin's healing abilities. He has a very strong defense, as seen when Sasuke nailed him with a full blown Chidori, and also when Jugo slammed him in the face with a curse seal powered arm, only to have him say "Those weaklings are really annoying"

During the battle with Sasuke he displayed the ability to conduct chakra down his blades to increase their cutting power like Chidori Current does with Sasuke's Kusanagi Sword.

[edit] Trivia

  • His Sword style is reminiscent of Roronoa Zoro's Santōryū in One Piece (a fellow Shonen Jump manga) in that he uses an odd number of swords as well as holding a sword in his mouth.
  • He quoted Muhammad Ali's famous line, "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" in chapter 411.
  • Though not his confirmed name, Kira Hachi is the fan name given to this Jinchūriki (the other being "Mr. Eight-Tails"). Also, it is hinted he hails from the Yotsuki clan.

Yugito Nii

Yugito Nii was a ninja of Kumogakure. Yugito was also the Jinchūriki of the Two-Tailed Demon Cat. She was captured by Hidan and Kakuzu of Akatsuki, and later died as the result of having the demon cat extracted from her body.

Part II

[edit] Hidan and Kakuzu Arc

She is first seen running through the sewers from some unknown persons, later revealed to be Hidan and Kakuzu. When she enters a large room, where all the sewers seems to meet, she finally stops. After some bickering between the two Akatsuki members, she reveals that she intentionally led them there and activates an explosive tag on the tunnel behind them, sealing them off. Knowing that they are from Akatsuki, she swears upon her name that she cannot let them go, and she transforms into a miniature version of the Two-Tailed Demon Cat. However, after a long and unseen battle, she is taken down by Hidan and brought to the Akatsuki lair by Zetsu for extraction, thus killing her.

[edit] Abilities

The only part of her abilities ever seen in the series was the ability to turn into a miniature version of the demon cat, giving her an upgrade in her abilities. The way she transforms is very similar to Naruto, being slowly covered in a dense fire chakra that takes the form of the Tailed Beast. It would seem that although letting go of the control to her Tailed Beast, she still have some control over the transformation and how much of its chakra that she can use.

[edit] Trivia

Two-Tailed Demon Cat

The Two-Tailed Demon Cat (ニ尾の猫俣) is a fire-breathing, flaming nekomata sealed within Yugito Nii of Kumogakure, the beast was said to be a spirit of vegeance. Soon after her introduction, Yugito is captured by two Akatsuki members, Hidan and Kakuzu, though it is unknown which was specifically assigned to capture her. Despite luring her two pursuers into a closed space, sealing the exits, and transforming herself into the demon cat, Yugito was overpowered and rendered unconscious by the two Akatsuki members. Zetsu later arrives to take her off their hands, and she later dies as a result of having the Tailed Beast extracted from her.

Gaara Jinchūriki Forms

Gaara of the Sand, like Naruto Uzumaki, is a Jinchūriki of the One-Tailed Shukaku. Unlike the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, the Shukaku doesn't have a unnaturally large supply of chakra that Gaara can use. Instead, the Shukaku's presence inside Gaara allows him to manipulate sand at will. As a added bonus for Gaara, the Shukaku itself can move the sand on its own to protect Gaara from any harm it can in order to preserve its own life. It should be noted however, unlike Naruto's constant battle for control over his body with the demon fox, Gaara is technically never subjugated to this. Because the Shukaku is said to devour the soul of its Jinchūriki if they were to fall asleep, Gaara has spent upwards to 15 years not sleeping at all and when the series started he was driven mostly from a desire for his own existence, and bloodlust, the latter being a trait the Shukaku can easily influence.

Controlled Jinchūriki Form

Though not in the same level as Naruto's Jinchūriki Form, Gaara's Jinchūriki Form is more or less simply him in control of his body and power. To this end, he can manipulate any grain of sand, but is easier if it has been mixed with his chakra. If need be, he can even create more sand by pulling ore from the earth and crushing it to make sand. The defining feature of this and all of his forms is that the sand has a mind and will on its own. Without even wanting it, his body is constantly covered in the Shield of Sand, an automatic shield to protect him.

[edit] Half Shukaku Form

Gaara in his Half Shukaku Form
Gaara in his Half Shukaku Form

When Gaara was in a rage after a fight with Sasuke Uchiha, he slowly slipped into his half-Shukaku form. In this form the gourd on his back slowly breaks down and begins to cover his body, covering his arms and then his face distorting it and giving it the Shukaku's features such as the yellow eye and markings, he even grows his one tail from the gourd which itself functions like a normal tail.

In this form, his speed and jumps have increased. He can use the sand on his arms to stretch his limbs to extraordinary lengths. This form allows him to even fire off his limbs at will, but still have them remain under his control, as he was able to pin Sakura Haruno to a tree and then slowly crush her as his battle with Naruto continued.

[edit] Miniature Shukaku Form

Gaara in his Miniature Shukaku Form
Gaara in his Miniature Shukaku Form

During his fight with Naruto, Gaara allowed the sand to cover his entire upper body, with only his feet remaining uncovered. While his facial features still remain slightly human, both his eyes resemble the Shukaku's with the same markings around its body. Notably, Gaara's "愛" remains on his head.

In this form, Gaara is able to use Sand Shuriken with apparent great ease as most of his body is now sand. He can use the Shukaku's wind element as he could now use the Wind Release: Infinite Sand Cloud Great Breakthrough. In addition much like Naruto's chakra shield, the sand is capable of absorbing a wide variety of attacks.

However, the defense given to his body still has one weak spot. Since his lower half is not covered, as seen by Naruto, a small explosion beneath his tail can make the entire sand form crumble, and fall apart.

[edit] Full Shukaku Form

The One-Tailed Shukaku
The One-Tailed Shukaku

Technically this isn't a Jinchūriki form than its a transformation into the Shukaku itself. After being hit by Naruto's Uzumaki Naruto Two Thousand Combo and moments away from being hit by a second, Gaara would in desperation, instantly create a giant copy of the Shukaku with himself hidden inside. While he is awake, Gaara still has control of the Shukaku's body and can fight "normally" with it. While in this form, Gaara transfers his eyesight to that of the Shukaku's body in turn resulting in his own eyes loosing their pupils.

The Shukaku's unique eye
The Shukaku's unique eye

When Gaara needs the Shukaku's full power, he would expose his upper body on top of the Shukaku's head and use the Feigning Sleep Technique, which allows the Shukaku to take full control over its body. While taking over the body, the Shukaku's eyes will become more apparant, changing from a simple light brown pupil, to its original version of a yellow pupil with a small black star with four blue circles around it. The Shukaku can use Wind Release: Drilling Air Bullet, by pressing compressed air out of it's stomach, to cause major blunt damage to its opponents.

The major weak spot of the Full Shukaku Form is as expected by Gaara himself being the Shukaku's chakra that keeps the large creation going. When Naruto successfully hit Gaara he woke him, stopping the Biju's increase in power as Gamabunta stated the longer Gaara was asleep the more of Shukaku's real power manifested. After Gaara was knocked out the entire Shukaku copy was shattered. Its full power is never seen as it was fortunately destroyed in a short time.

One-Tailed Shukaku

The One-Tailed Shukaku (一尾の守鶴) or the Shukaku of the Sand (砂の守鶴) is the weakest of the Tailed Beasts. It is said to be a corrupted spirit of a Sand monk from Sunagakure that turned into a demon. It was originally sealed inside a teakettle and then placed inside its first host. It was sealed inside Gaara by Chiyo on the orders of Gaara's father, the Fourth Kazekage, by using Gaara's mother as the sacrifice, but only after being removed from a second host.

Personality

The Shukaku is intelligent, but also incoherent, giving it the demeanor of a drunkard, this fits well with the typical depictions of tanuki in Japanese folklore. The Shukaku itself can translate to "drunk" in Japanese. Like other tailed beasts, its innate rage and bloodlust influence its behavior, and it relishes in the opportunity to kill anyone in sight.

[edit] Activity inside Gaara

As a host of the Shukaku, Gaara has the ability to move and levitate sand at will, and is protected at all times by the Shield of Sand, regardless of his will (even self-inflicted injuries are prevented by the sand). He also suffers from lifelong insomnia, a side effect of being the Shukaku's host. Whenever he falls asleep, the Shukaku would eat away his personality, making him a monster. The Shukaku, knowing full well, that if Gaara dies, it will die too, can control the sand itself to automatically protect Gaara's body from any harm.

When angry or in a state of bloodlust, Gaara can use the sand in his gourd to take the form of a miniature Shukaku or even create the giant copy of the Shukaku's body. It is only when Gaara begins to take on the Shukaku's forms is he allowed access to its wind element, such as Wind Release: Drilling Air Bullet. Gaara can even allow the Shukaku to take over the full Shukaku form by going to sleep, but is left vulnerable as his sleeping body is left unprotected on the Shukaku's head.

[edit] Extracted

Deidara is assigned to capture the Shukaku. After defeating Gaara in combat and taking him to the Akatsuki's lair, the Shukaku is forcefully extracted from Gaara, thus killing him. Gaara is resurrected through a combination of Chiyo's life-transferring technique and Naruto's chakra. Gaara's ability to control sand still appears to be intact, though to what degree remains unclear.

[edit] Trivia

  • Since Gaara was infused with the Shukaku from birth, it would seem that the Jinchūriki's elemental chakra abilities melded with Gaara's own, as the Kazekage used sand to pull Naruto's hand to his own. The ability the Shukaku grants is most likely wind nature and earth nature chakra. Kakashi's explanations in Part II indicate that elemental natures of variable type from normal result from the mixture of multiple natures simultaneously. Therefore, although there is no proof of this in either manga or anime, it would seem that a mixture of wind and earth natures of chakra would be sufficient to produce the sand manipulation.
  • He was originally sealed inside a teakettle and then placed inside his first host, similar to the tale of Bunbuku Chagama

Jinchūriki

The Jinchūriki (人柱力), or hosts, exhibit extraordinary powers, and in some cases are stronger than their Tailed Beasts for the very fact that they are able to control their power.

In addition, if a Tailed Beast goes too long without a host, it can lose its intelligence and become nothing more than a giant animal.

Appearance

The hosts usually show some physical characteristics of the Tailed Beast within them (likewise Naruto's fox-like "whiskers" on his cheeks and Gaara's raccoon-like "rings" around his eyes) and the Tailed Beast's traits can become infused with the host's personality.

[edit] Personality

According to Akatsuki, the Jinchūriki tend to be lonely people who loathe humanity, which was proven true when the first two Tailed Beasts that were sealed by the organizaiton was done with almost little effort from their ninja villages. In fact, they were glad to be rid of their Jinchūriki. The Tailed Beasts are also very protective of their hosts for the sole reason: if the host dies, so does the demon inside. Likewise, if the Tailed Beast is removed from the host, the host would die.

[edit] Mental Affects

There is a theory that all Jinchūriki have some sort of effect on their mental well being. This stems from the known fact that Gaara was unable to sleep ever. In the Chunin Exam Arc, Gaara used the Feigning Sleep Technique to allow the Shukaku to take control, and it was explained that he was unable to ever sleep normally because of the Shukaku. This leads to the idea that all Jinchūriki have some kind of mental problem due to the fact that part of them is always fighting to keep their demon contained. For Gaara, this is manifest in the inability to sleep. Very little is known about most Jinchūriki. However, since Gaara's seal was weaker on purpose, it probably does not have that much of a heavy effect.

[edit] Sealing

So far, there are only two known methods to seal a Tailed Beast into a host. One was the Dead Demon Consuming Seal, which Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage, used to seal the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox into Naruto, and the technique that Chiyo used to seal the One-Tailed Shukaku into Gaara. The only known technique to extract a Tailed Beast is the Akatsuki's Illusionary Dragon Nine Consuming Seals, a three day long jutsu that with the combined effort of all the Akatsuki members, forces the Tailed Beast out of its host and into a nine-eyed statue. The Akatsuki has so far captured seven Tailed Beasts.

Naruto Uzumaki

Naruto Uzumaki (うずまきナルト, Uzumaki Naruto) is the main character in the anime and manga series Naruto.

Naruto can mean "maelstrom," and is also the name for a sliced stick of Kamaboko with a pink whirlpool design in the middle that is used as a topping for Ramen which is also Naruto's favorite food. The surname "Uzumaki" is a pun on "spiral" (渦巻), while "Uzumaki" refers to a three-dimensional spiral, like a whirlpool or vortex. A more accurate translation for spiral would be "Rasen." The Konoha leaf symbol is drawn with an arrow attached to a spiral, part of the seal on his abdomen is a spiral, the symbol on the back of his jacket and shoulders is a spiral, and one of his attacks is Rasengan, which means "Spiraling Sphere." "Uzumaki" can also mean "whirlpool," in reference to the Naruto whirlpool (鳴門の渦潮), named after the city of Naruto. An interesting fact is that his mother is form the Whirlpool Nation.

Naruto's definitive characteristic in battle is his immense amount of chakra. While naturally having a significant amount of chakra on his own, he can summon a gargantuan amount given to him by the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox.

October 10, Naruto's birthday, was Health and Sports Day ("Taiiku no hi") in Japan when his character was conceived. The holiday, however, was moved to the second Monday of October in 1999.

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of the manga series, stated in a recent interview with the U.S. Shonen Jump that his childhood was like that of Naruto's years while he was enrolled in the Academy.

Naruto consistently ranked in the top two (taking first place twice) in the first five official Shonen Jump character popularity polls. However, in the sixth character poll, he ranked fourth.

Background

Spoiler Warning: Spoiler details may follow.

Naruto was born on October 10th to Minato Namikaze the Fourth Hokage, and Kushina Uzumaki, a kunoichi from the former Whirlpool Country, and was named after the lead character in Jiraiya's book. As a newborn infant, the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, which had attacked the village of Konoha, was sealed within Naruto's body by his father.

Despite the Fourth Hokage's wish that Naruto be seen as a hero who contained the demon fox, the villagers of Konoha harbored a fierce hatred for the young child, since he bore the spirit of the demon fox who decimated their once peaceful village. Naruto wasn't even aware of the presence of the demonic entity inside him until he was twelve years old, leaving him confused for most of his childhood about why the villagers of Konoha hated him so much.

Fortunately, Naruto was befriended by his compassionate ninja instructor, a Chunin named Iruka Umino. Though Iruka's own parents perished at the hands of the demon fox, Iruka didn't blame Naruto for their deaths. Instead, Iruka accepted Naruto and empathized with the boy's desire to be accepted, since he too once had the same desire. He may have been the first person to believe in Naruto, and has made a lasting impact on Naruto himself. It is through Iruka's presence as Naruto's only family figure that Naruto learns to overcome his sadness.

Personality

Before graduating from the Academy, Naruto had a craving for acknowledgment. He would play pranks all around the village in an attempt to be recognized by its inhabitants. This included, but was not limited to, painting graffiti on the monument depicting the first four Hokages, and transforming himself into a naked female version of himself to annoy his instructors. He would also tell everyone who doubted him on a near-constant basis that he would one day become Hokage. As he tells Iruka, he wishes to achieve this rank in order to be recognized by those around him, and to have the responsibility of defending them. Even after graduating, Naruto is still determined to be recognized, and becomes the "Number One Loudest, Unpredictable, Hyperactive Knuckleheaded Ninja" of Konoha, as described by Kakashi Hatake.

Naruto's exuberant personality and fiery desire for self-improvement strongly impacts the lives of those around him. At the beginning of the series, Naruto befriends Konohamaru, the grandson of the Third Hokage, and it is through his brief tutelage that Konohamaru learns that the path to success is through plenty of hard work. Despite his brash, headstrong, and even slightly dumb nature, Naruto is a clever prankster who overcomes his opponents through a combination of willpower, clever diversions, and more-often-than-not dumb luck (though as Kakashi states, luck is very important).

Naruto has a great sense of humor, albeit somewhat perverted in some cases, and usually smiles and laughs all round (though at times, he smiles to hide whatever is bothering him so no one worries about him; those who are closest to him see right through it). Outside his world, he's just an ordinary, loud, hotheaded kid with a fierce will and a knack for getting into trouble.

One of Naruto's hobbies is gardening, even though Naruto was beaten in episode 20 for not knowing the difference between weeds and herbs. He is the one who gives Kakashi Mr. Ukki, the plant seen on Kakashi's windowsill (Kishimoto once described how he had the same plant for a while until he fed it undiluted plant food).

In the Japanese versions, Naruto often ends his sentences with "dattebayo," and as such has a unique style of speech. In Japanese, an ending with no literal meaning can be added to make the tone sound tougher, childish, girlish, or many other changes depending on the many existing endings. "-ttebayo," which is not a well-known ending, has no literal meaning and cannot be translated, but carries the connotations of the speaker being uncultured, brusque, and seeming tougher than they really are. In the English anime and video games, he often says "Believe it!" to fit with the mouth movements of "-ttebayo."

Despite rapidly maturing throughout the series, Naruto retains a naive streak and a knack for childish accessories. For example, his pajamas always include a comical black nightcap with eyes and teeth. Naruto also keeps his money in a chubby, green-frog wallet he affectionately calls Gama-chan.

Naruto is an avid eater with an appetite comparable to that of Choji Akimichi's. His favorite food, ramen, serves as a bond between Naruto and anyone who would treat him to it. In many episodes, he can be seen devouring enormous servings of ramen in a variety of flavors. However, an opportunity to eat any sort of food usually leaves Naruto lying down and exclaiming, "Whew, I ate too much!" with an exaggerated pot belly.

Even though Naruto is usually quite dense in most cases, which often results in Sakura or someone nearby hitting him, he can actually be quite observant when he wants to be, or the subject tweaks his interest. During their first meeting with Rock Lee, it is Naruto who points out to the rest of Team 7 that Lee's hand wraps hide his battered and bruised knuckles, indicating Lee is the type of person who trains non-stop.

In Part II, and a two-and-a-half year time skip, Naruto shows physical growth, sports a new outfit, and appears to not only have increased in strength, speed, and techniques, but intelligence as well, Kakashi even said that Naruto has become very cunning. However, Naruto is still a Genin, since he hasn't had a chance to take the Chunin Exams again. According to Tsunade, Naruto is also slowly adopting some of Jiraiya's perverted traits. During his apprenticeship under Jiraiya, Naruto was able to read the latest of the "Icha Icha" series written by Jiraiya, although when he presents a copy to Kakashi, he says he thought it was boring.

It seems Naruto's feelings for Sakura have matured. He still has a massive crush on Sakura, however, he is much more mature about it. They have a very easy time communicating with each other, despite the nearly three-year separation. They are capable of having a casual conversation together. They also now seem to like spending time together. Naruto is now noticeably taller than Sakura (in Part I, he is made fun of for being shorter than her), even Kiba states that Naruto has become a "giant".

Naruto and the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox

The demon fox, trapped within Naruto.
The demon fox, trapped within Naruto.

Main article: Naruto Jinchūriki Forms As the host of the demon fox, both Naruto's body and occasionally his mind are influenced by it. Physically, Naruto has some of the demon fox's characteristics, such as whisker-like marks on his cheeks and larger than normal canines. His eyes are also somewhat slitted like a fox. He also has increased stamina and healing ability, which allows him to recover from major injuries within a day and minor injuries within a few seconds. Mentally, Naruto remains largely unaffected, save for a few animalistic traits that slip through, such as his occasional tendency to leap between trees on all fours. Since the demon fox was sealed inside Naruto at birth, it is unclear just what parts of his personality it has had an effect on; however, it could explain Naruto's devilish side for pulling pranks to gain attention, as well as his stubbornness to never back down from a challenge. These traits become more pronounced as he draws upon the demon fox's chakra.

Naruto's normal chakra level is considered extremely high, partially because of the demon fox. Even without directly drawing upon it, a small amount of the demon fox's chakra is always mixed with his own. His body instinctively rejects the bulk of it due to the damage it would cause. Ebisu implies that Naruto's poor chakra control stems from this, as a portion of his chakra is used to reject the demon fox's overwhelming chakra. According to Kakashi, Naruto's regular chakra level is about double that of Kakashi's own. As such, he is naturally suited to jutsu that use a large amount of chakra, such as his signature jutsu: Shadow Clone Technique. While most ninja are only capable of creating a few clones safely, due to the jutsu's hazard of equally dividing the user's chakra among the clones, Naruto is able to create upwards of two thousand while maintaining a decent supply of chakra in each one.

The demon fox's chakra usually comes to Naruto during life threatening or other stressful situations, given to him by the demon fox itself to ensure its survival. Naruto eventually learns to contact the demon fox and demand some of its chakra, which it seems to comply to out of amusement. The reason Naruto is able to access its chakra is because of the unique way in which it was sealed. Though the demon fox remains trapped within Naruto, its chakra can leak out through the seal and mix with Naruto's. The demon fox's near-limitless supply of chakra becomes an invaluable weapon for Naruto, often turning the tide of a difficult battle in his favor. The demon fox's chakra increases every aspect of Naruto's physiology, making him a nearly unstoppable force. His speed and strength increase far beyond that of any normal human, and even beyond that of most ninja. It also increases his healing rate, allowing him to regenerate even major wounds in a few seconds. His stamina is also increased beyond its normal level, allowing him to fight without tiring. Finally, if the chakra shield is summoned, it is capable of acting on its own as a separate entity, making it difficult to predict Naruto's movements. Naruto can usually suppress the demon fox's chakra by himself before his tailed transformations begin surfacing. Beyond that, the demon fox's chakra seems to increase in intensity with time. Several external methods can be used to suppress it once this occurs, such as Jiraiya's sealing talisman or Yamato's sealing techniques.

Graduation

Naruto begins as an unsuccessful student of the ninja academy, having failed the graduation exam twice. Each time, it had been based on the Clone Technique, which he could never perform properly. His third try ends up no different, and it seems as if he'll have to go through yet another year at the Academy. However, he gets an unusual break in the form of Mizuki, who tricks Naruto into stealing a forbidden scroll in order to steal it himself without being blamed. To do so, he claims that Naruto will graduate if he simply learns a technique from the scroll. In an ironic twist, the jutsu he learns is the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, which is an enhanced form of the regular version. After learning the truth about Mizuki and subsequently beating him to a pulp for it, he is allowed to graduate for learning such an advanced clone technique. Naruto also learns about the demon fox from Mizuki, who tells Naruto about it despite the taboo forbidding it.

Survival Test and Wave Country arcs

Having graduated, Naruto is paired with Sakura Haruno and Sasuke Uchiha in Team 7. The three do not work well together, and having Kakashi Hatake assigned as their Jonin-sensei doesn't help matters, since he emphasizes teamwork above all else. His first test, which is designed to test their teamwork, goes badly to say the least, since not one of them passes and Naruto is tied to a post for cheating. However, Kakashi gives them another chance, and they pass the test by learning to think as a team.

With Team 7 officially formed, they start going on simple missions. Naruto, wanting to be challenged, inadvertently gets Team 7 assigned an A-rank bodyguard mission for a bridge builder named Tazuna, though it was listed as C-rank due to misinformation on the client's part. In their first battle with two Chunin-level ninja, Naruto freezes out of fear, while Sasuke calmly takes on the enemy. Kakashi intervenes before either is seriously injured, though Naruto is poisoned. Sasuke makes fun of Naruto for his fear, beginning their long-standing rivalry. The rest of the team then have a conversation over what to do about the poison, all the while making Naruto feel like more and more of a burden because he froze. Finally out of frustration Naruto takes action by stabbing a kunai into his wound to bleed out the poison, vowing to protect the bridge-builder and never freeze up again. Kakashi then has to bandage the wound out of fear of Naruto dying of blood loss, but it's seen that the wound already starts to heal.

In a subsequent battle against Zabuza Momochi, a Jonin-level ninja sent by evil businessman Gato to assassinate their client, Naruto freezes up again but upon seeing the bandage on his hand and remembering his vow, gets over his fear and works with Sasuke to free Kakashi from a water prison created by Zabuza. Despite their rivalry, the two make a perfect team and free Kakashi, who subsequently defeats Zabuza. Zabuza is saved from death by Haku, who disguised himself as a hunter-nin and put Zabuza into a death-like coma. He departed with the body under the guise of disposing with it for security reasons.

While they continue protecting the bridge builder, Kakashi teaches Team 7 to walk up trees using chakra. Sakura masters the technique instantly, while Sasuke only gets a short distance and Naruto can't manage to stick to the practice tree. While normally not one to ask for help, Naruto asks Sakura for pointers, and quickly catches up to Sasuke. The two serve as motivation for one another, since neither wants to lose to the other, and they master the technique in a few days. During their training, Naruto stumbles upon Haku, not knowing who he really is, and the two have a short conversation about protecting those precious to them.

This conversation serves as a basis for their eventual battle, during which Sasuke seemingly gives his life to protect Naruto (Haku had in fact done the same thing to Sasuke as he had to Zabuza, but deliberately avoids telling Naruto). Enraged, Naruto subconsciously calls upon the demon fox's chakra and defeats Haku in a blind rage, despite Haku being even stronger than Zabuza. Though it appears as if Naruto will kill Haku, he pulls back when he realizes that Haku is the same person he met in the woods earlier. Haku, having no other purpose in life than to protect Zabuza and fulfill his dreams, asks that Naruto kill him. Naruto is eventually persuaded to do so by the story of Haku's past, but doesn't get the chance. Haku, sensing Zabuza was in danger, instead kills himself by intercepting a fatal attack from Kakashi. Zabuza was initially indifferent to Haku's death, leading to a guilt trip by Naruto. Zabuza actually does care, however, and can't hide that fact after Naruto's speech. When Zabuza's employer betrays him, Zabuza sacrifices his own life to kill him. As a final wish, Zabuza dies next to Haku, hoping to be in death where he wasn't in life.

Profoundly affected by the mission, Naruto vows not to become an emotionless weapon as Zabuza and Haku were (for the most part). At the end of the episode, when Naruto and company leave, the villagers decide to name the bridge "The Great Naruto Bridge," as Naruto changed one character in the arc, Inari, who had lost all hope after his "father" died after Gato had taken control of the Wave Country.

Chunin Exam and Destruction of Konoha arcs

Fresh from their mission in the Wave Country, Team 7 is admitted into the Chunin Exams. During this time in particular, Naruto makes several friends out of former enemies, and grows much stronger through these battles. He also sees some of the other Genin in a new light.

Written Exam

During the first part of the exam, which is a written exam designed specifically to be too hard for Genin to complete, Naruto is left sweating over the fact that he can't answer any of the questions. He does not realize that the purpose of the exam is to cheat without being caught by the proctors positioned around the room. Hinata Hyuga, who is sitting next to him, offers to let him copy her test. Though not sure at first, he almost takes her up on her offer. However, he hears the tell-tale sound of a moving pencil from one of the proctors, signifying that they see someone cheating, and decides it's best not to, since Hinata would get in trouble, too. Hinata is glad that Naruto really does care about her, protecting her from getting into trouble and having to forfeit the Chunin exams. The last question of the test, whose secret answer is merely the willingness to try, is where Naruto's attitude rubs off on the other Genin. Unwilling to give up, he proclaims in front of everyone participating that he won't be scared away, and as such many more decide to do the same than they would have otherwise.

Forest of Death

During the second part of the exam, Naruto and Sasuke end up in opposite positions as they had during Team 7's first battle. Sakura and Sasuke, having met Orochimaru after a giant summoned snake ate Naruto, are paralyzed with fear from Orochimaru's great intention to kill. Naruto, who wasn't there to experience it, not only kills the giant snake which had previously detained him, but fights off another one of Orochimaru's summoned snakes by using the demon fox's chakra. In this instance, he retains control. Sakura and Sasuke get their first look at Naruto's demon fox state, though they don't truly understand what it means. After pinning the giant snake, Naruto mocks Sasuke in the same manner as Sasuke had done to him. Orochimaru uses the opportunity to grab Naruto and seal the demon fox's chakra, which remains sealed until after the preliminary parts of the Chunin Exam. Naruto is left unconscious for the remainder of the fight, and Team 7 only survives because Orochimaru never intended to kill them, only wanting to brand Sasuke with the Cursed Seal of Heaven. To complete this part of the exam, Team 7 and Kabuto Yakushi, a fellow Genin, are forced to fight off a group of Rain Genin, one of whom had attacked Sasuke earlier. Despite his own chakra being disrupted from the seal, Naruto defeats the entire team almost single-handedly using his clones, though a small distraction from Kabuto also helped.

Preliminary Rounds

Because of Naruto's earlier outburst during the first part of the exam, as well as a particularly skilled group of remaining candidates after that point, 21 people make it to the third part of the exam. This is slightly more than twice the normal amount, so preliminary exams are held to cut the numbers in half with one on one battles. Before the exams begin, Sasuke admits to Naruto that he wants to fight him. Naruto is eventually paired against Kiba Inuzuka. Kiba and virtually everyone else present believe Naruto stands no chance, and Kiba even mocks Naruto's dream of being Hokage. Naruto, however, takes everything Kiba throws at him, despite the clear advantage in Kiba's favor. Kiba gives Naruto one punch, which nocks him over, but surprising everyone, Naruto gets up. Kiba manages to throw two smoke bombs and Akamaru atacks Naruto and apperiently Naruto is knocked out, but it turns out Naruto transformed into Akamaru to attack Kiba. Kiba is surprised that Naruto learned the transformation Jutsu and the Shadow clone jutsu, when originally he was bad at transforming and the original clone jutsu. Kiba gives Akamaru a special food pill and takes one himself, and his increased strenth and speed completely overwhelms Naruto, but after a while, Naruto gets an idea. after Kiba's next attack, which involves smoke bombs, Naruto transforms into Kiba and everyone is confused on which one is Naruto and which is Akamaru. Naruto tricks Kiba into attacking Akamaru, but is still at a disadvantage, but paralizes Kiba by farting directly in his face (kiba was trying to attack from behind, then, for the first time, dishes out his Naruto Uzumaki Barrage. Other notable battles include Hinata's battle against Neji Hyuga. Neji labels Hinata as a failure and a dropout who can't change her fate, enraging Naruto. After her utter defeat at Neji's hands, Naruto tries to attack him, but is stopped by Rock Lee, who insists that a dropout defeating a genius would be sight to see, but should be done in a proper match. On Hinata's spilled blood, Naruto swears to defeat Neji. Sure enough, he gets his chance. Once the preliminaries are over, he is paired against Neji for the first match. The nine remaining candidates are given one month to prepare for the main matches.

Final Rounds

Hoping to get a lot of training in during the month-long break, Naruto tries to get Kakashi to help. Kakashi, however, is busy training Sasuke, and leaves Naruto in the care of Ebisu. Ebisu begins training Naruto to walk on water, but the training is cut short with the introduction of Jiraiya, one of the Legendary Sannin, three of the most powerful ninja alive. Ebisu catches Jiraiya peeping on women and tries to stop him. Not happy about the interruption, Jiraiya summons a toad and has it tongue-whip Ebisu into unconsciousness. Minus one teacher, Naruto insists that Jiraiya replace Ebisu. Always the insatiable pervert, it's Naruto's Sexy Jutsu that convinces him to do so. For the remainder of the month, Jiraiya teaches Naruto to summon toads and use the demon fox chakra, which is essential for the former technique. It is during this time that Naruto first summons Gamabunta, who, after cowing Naruto into submission, agrees to make Naruto his subordinate. However, summoning the toad king lands Naruto in the hospital the day before the main matches begin. Shikamaru Nara comes and brings him a fruit basket, but both Naruto and Shikamaru inadvertently catch Gaara attempting to kill Rock Lee, whom he had tried to kill during an earlier battle. During their confrontation, Naruto learns that Gaara contains a demon too, and that their pasts are quite similar. Gaara, however, only had one person acknowledge him, and that one person ended up trying to kill him. This drove Gaara insane, and convinced him that the only way to insure his existence was to kill anyone who threatened it. Gaara would have killed both Naruto and Shikamaru then and there, but Might Guy stops him from doing so.

Once the main matches begin, Naruto originally appears outmatched once again against the genius Neji. Despite this, Naruto continually questions Neji's outlook on life, even though every attack he tries is repelled. Neji eventually decides to finish the match by closing off Naruto's chakra points, but Naruto gets up from this attack, too. Impressed, Neji tells Naruto about his painful past and the cursed seal on his forehead. Neji insists that Naruto could never know what it's like to carry a mark that will be with him till death, though this couldn't be further from the truth. Naruto uses his shadow clones throughout the match, but when he finally tricks Neji, Neji uses his Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms. Now all hope for Naruto seems to have vanished completely, and even Hinata begins crying, but Naruto remembers about Jiraiya's statement that Naruto has two kinds of chakra. Not convinced by Neji's reasoning, Naruto calls upon the demon fox's chakra, surprising everyone even more, and instantly evens the odds. In the end, Naruto defeats Neji with the use of a shadow clone, which surprises everyone in the arena even more, as they thought Naruto was a terrible ninja who only beat Kiba through dumb luck. This convinces Neji that fate truly can be changed.

Destruction of Konoha

After the attack on Konoha begins, Naruto, Sakura, Shikamaru, and Pakkun are sent to retrieve Sasuke, who is chasing after Gaara. Sasuke had injured Gaara during their battle, so Temari and Kankuro escaped with him so he could recover. During their pursuit, Shikamaru decides to stay behind to deal with a group of Sound-nin tracking them. Though Sakura is unsure if Shikamaru will actually confront them, Naruto has complete faith in him. He notes that Shikamaru is lazy, but when he actually tries to do something will always come through. Upon catching up to Gaara, Naruto is initially unwilling to fight him, since he is aware of just what Gaara is and Sasuke is unable to help. He is convinced to fight after Gaara captures Sakura and pins her with a detached hand of sand, which suffocates her at a slow rate. Since defeating Gaara is the only way to remove it, Naruto gets serious, badly damaging Gaara in order to protect his friends. Even in the face of Gaara's full Shukaku form, he refuses to give up, summoning Gamabunta and destroying the sand creature with the chief toad's help. In the end, Naruto lands the final punch on Gaara, leaving him unable to move. Naruto's not much better off, but crawls his way to Gaara to make sure he's defeated. As he crawls, he admits to Gaara that he knows the same pain of loneliness, but won't let Gaara kill the people who saved him from it. Though Sasuke stops Naruto, he still manages to change Gaara's outlook on life.

Return of Itachi and Search for Tsunade arcs

After the attack on Konoha, Jiraiya is asked to become the Fifth Hokage by Konoha's elders. He declines the offer, however, and instead decides to locate Tsunade, also one of the Legendary Sannin, and have her become the Fifth. The elders offer to have an ANBU squad accompany him, but he refuses. Aside from the fact that traveling with an ANBU squad would only make Tsunade harder to find, he already has someone he wants to take: Naruto. Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki, two members of Akatsuki, are searching for Naruto, so Jiraiya is taking Naruto to protect him. Naruto initially doesn't want to go, but Jiraiya offers to teach him a powerful technique, which instantly sells Naruto on the idea. Despite Jiraiya taking him along for the trip, Itachi and Kisame do eventually find them. Using a hypnotized woman to draw Jiraiya away, the two attempt to kidnap Naruto. The arrival of Sasuke slows them slightly, though only because Itachi is unwilling to finish Sasuke off. Regardless, the short delay is enough time for Jiraiya to arrive and force the two Akatsuki to retreat.

With the threat from Akatsuki gone, Jiraiya begins teaching Naruto the Rasengan, an advanced A-rank technique, developed by the Fourth Hokage, that only requires one hand and no hand seals to use; it's chakra manipulation in its purest form. Naruto is mostly left to learn the technique by himself, since he needs to learn the trick to doing it by himself. Jiraiya never tells Naruto this, leaving Naruto disappointed. While they are searching for Tsunade, Tsunade is approached by Orochimaru, who wants her to heal his sealed arms. In exchange, he offers to resurrect her dead brother and lover, and allows her a week to consider the offer. When Jiraiya and Naruto finally find Tsunade, Naruto can't believe that she's going to be the Fifth Hokage. Her disrespectful remarks to both the position and the recently deceased Third don't help matters, and he challenges her to a fight. Against one of the Sannin, Naruto has no chance, and Tsunade holds him off with a single finger. Though he has yet to perfect it, he attempts to use the rasengan on her. She dodges this, too, and then berates Jiraiya for teaching Naruto a technique he can't possibly master. Naruto insists that he can, and bets that he can learn it in three days. Naruto's personality reminds Tsunade of her deceased loved ones, so she takes the bet, giving Naruto a week. If Naruto wins, she'll accept that he can become Hokage, and give him her incredibly valuable necklace that originally belonged to the First Hokage. Her two deceased loved ones had also owned it for a time, and died soon after receiving it.

By week's end, Naruto still hasn't mastered the technique, but notes that he has an alternate means of completing it should it be necessary. Their bet is interrupted by the arrival of Orochimaru and Kabuto, whom Tsunade betrays. Naruto is initially left out of the fight, but comes to Tsunade's aid after Kabuto tries to kill her. It is during their fight that Naruto finally completes the rasengan, using a shadow clone to do what he could not do by himself. Kabuto is severely injured by the technique, but injures Naruto just as badly. Naruto is saved by Tsunade, who gets over her hemophobia, or fear of blood, in order to save him. He regains consciousness just long enough to proclaim he won their bet. In turn, she gives him her necklace and accepts that he will become Hokage someday.

Sasuke Retrieval arc

In the anime, a short filler arc involving a mission to the Land of Tea precedes this arc. This filler arc does little except reinforce Sasuke's point of view in the next arc. After returning with Tsunade and having Sasuke healed, Naruto recognizes Sakura's feelings for Sasuke. Though still jealous, he is mature enough not to get in the way. Meanwhile, Sasuke broods over the substantial progress Naruto has made in comparison to his own. Feeling inferior, Sasuke challenges Naruto to a fight. The two go to the roof of the hospital, where each voices their opinion of their rivalry, with Naruto insisting they're equals while Sasuke thinks otherwise. Their battle is short, ending with each trying to use their most powerful attack on the other. Kakashi steps in to prevent them from injuring Sakura, who attempts to intervene. Kakashi deflects their attacks into adjacent water towers. At first, it appears as if Sasuke did more damage, because Naruto's tower only had a small hole in the front while Sasuke's was greatly damaged. Later it is revealed Naruto's attack also blew a large hole out the back of the tower, demonstrating that Naruto's strength is greatly superior. Though Kakashi tries to convince Sasuke to give up his quest for revenge, his defeat at the hands of the Sound Four leads him to defect to Orochimaru.

Naruto's friends hold off the Sound Four so Naruto can reach Sasuke. Once he does, the two have a much more serious battle, during which they each bring out their respective "gifts," those being Naruto's demon fox chakra and Sasuke's cursed seal. During the battle, Sasuke claims that he doesn't need any friends, as that does nothing to make him more powerful, since killing Itachi is his only goal. Naruto refuses to accept Sasuke's decision, as by his own admission Sasuke is like a brother to him and he can't bear to lose him to the twisted path of self-destruction he has chosen. This drives Naruto to draw upon the demon fox's chakra to such a degree that he nearly overcomes Sasuke's fully awakened Sharingan. As such, Sasuke finally acknowledges Naruto as an equal. In the end, the two use their most powerful attacks against each other once more, only this time enhancing the attacks with their respective gifts. They do not go through with their attacks, however. Naruto purposefully misses, instead scratching Sasuke's headband, and Sasuke doesn't kill Naruto because he doesn't want to become like Itachi (though this mentality seemingly changes in Part II as he now has no reservations about killing Naruto).

With Sasuke's successful defection, Naruto's main goal is to bring Sasuke back before Orochimaru can take him as his new host. Jiraiya, recognizing Naruto's determination, remembers his own attempt to stop Orochimaru from defecting. Though he clearly believes Naruto's goal to be foolish, he takes Naruto with him for a two-and-a-half year period of training. There is a three-month break before this happens, which was covered by series of filler arcs in the anime. Like the Tea Country arc, these provide very little plot and character development. There are a few exceptions (i.e Hinata, Anko), but none involve Naruto's character directly.

Part II

Rescue Gaara Arc

Naruto in Part II
Naruto in Part II

When Part II begins, Naruto reestablishes himself in Konoha, after meeting some of his old friends again. Kakashi then takes the remaining members of Team 7 for a second bell test, which even with their now excellent team work, the two couldn't take the bells from Kakashi by force. It was Naruto who thought of using Kakashi's obsession with the Icha Icha series of books to their advantage. Naruto and Sakura rushed Kakashi at once, with Naruto yelling spoilers for the new book, causing Kakashi to close his eyes, thus losing the advantage of the Sharingan, and his ears so he couldn't hear what they were saying, allowing the two to retrieve the bells. Afterwards, Tsunade gave them a mission, a request from Sunagakure, to help rescue their captured Kazekage.

It was when Team 7 was on the way to Sunagakure that Naruto finally reveals to Sakura and Temari that the demon fox was sealed inside him. Sakura sympathizes with him, as does Temari, who is very grateful to Naruto for the change in her little brother, Gaara. With this revelation, Sakura begins to understand why the village hated him and why he was so alone growing up. Continuing on their mission with the help of Team Guy Naruto and his team got as far as to find Gaara, already dead, the Shukaku extracted from him by the Akatsuki, and the only members there, Deidara, and Sasori. In a rage, Naruto goes after Deidara alone, after the latter used one of his clay creations to grab Gaara's body as bait to capture Naruto as well, with Kakashi deciding to back him up. While they chased him, Kakashi used his Mangekyo Sharingan to cripple Deidara, allowing Naruto and a few clones to grab and attack him, while another grabed his clay bird to retrieve Gaara's body, whom Naruto hoped survived. Seeing Gaara's body and releasing that the Deidara he was attacking was just a Clay Clone, Naruto becomes enraged. Kakashi watches as Naruto begins to grow two chakra tails of the demon fox, to which he quickly supresses before its complete, using a seal Jiraiya gave him just before the mission. When Deidara escapes and Chiyo revives Gaara at the cost of her life, Team 7 and Team Guy return to Konoha, with new information about Orochimaru's location.

Sai and Sasuke Arc

When the teams return to Konoha, Naruto is reunited with Shino, whom Naruto couldn't recongize because of his hood, Kiba, who calls Naruto a "giant" because he is now taller than him, and Hinata, is so overcome with emotions by simply seeing Naruto, she couldn't bring herself to see him herself, instead looking up to see Naruto talking to her and faints. Later Naruto meets up with Shikamaru and Choji before the three are "attacked" by Ink Lions, created by Sai, the repleacement of Sasuke in Team 7. Team 7 is then given a new leader, the ANBU ninja, Yamato, for their next mission, to use Sasori's information to get info on Orochimaru's plans, and more importantly, get Sasuke back. On the way, Sai's personality, and his general lack of respect for the traitorious Sasuke causes conflicts with his other teammates.

The meeting with Kabuto doesn't however go as planned as Orochimaru himself shows up before they could get the information from Kabuto. Yamato calls his team for support, but Orochimaru brings up the touchy situtaion of Sasuke. Naruto enraged that Orochimaru is refering to Sasuke like he belonged to him demanded Sasuke to be returned to them, and quickly slips from one to three-tails transformation. When its clear Orochimaru couldn't be beaten that easily, his fury increases and Naruto slips into the grasp of the demon fox, and he grows four chakra tails, allowing the demon fox to take over his body, turning him into a miniature demon fox.

In battle, four-tailed Naruto was almost unbeatable. No matter what Orochimaru attacked him with, Naruto either shrugged it off, or attacked with greater force. Finally, Naruto began to charge a concentrated chakra ball and fired it that seemingly defeated Orochimaru. However Orochimaru simply used his snake like body to expand his neck and stabing Naruto in the chest with his Kusanagi Sword, which sends Naruto back towards the bridge, but doesn't go through his chakra shield. Kabuto mentions to Sakura that Naruto is like this because of his desire to save Sasuke, and to fulfill his promise to Sakura to bring him home, to the point where he would kill Orochimaru and not even be conscious. In tears, Sakura runs to try to talk sense into Naruto, saying she will bring Sasuke back for both of them, but the four-tailed Naruto instead attacks her with one of his tails, injuring her left arm and thus leaving an opening for Yamato's wood trap. Yamato then forceably supresses the demon fox's chakra so Naruto turns back to normal, but covered in his own blood. As Sakura heals him, Sakura reveals to Yamato that she wishes to be more useful to Naruto in his plight to find Sasuke and beat the Akatsuki, who was about to say something to Sakura, but he was interuppted by Naruto regaining consciousness.

When the remainder of the team breaks into Orochimaru's hidout they first find Sai who reveals to them his mission from Danzo, to side with Orochimaru in destroying Konoha, and to then betray him in the end. They bring Sai out of the base where he questions Naruto on why he would risk his life to save someone who doesn't care about him anymore, and Naruto explains that he is his friend, the first person to truely acknowledge his existance, just then Kabuto appears but is quickly subdued by Sai. With Kabuto temporarily delt with, they once again break into to split up to find Sasuke, Sakura going with Yamato, and Sai going with Naruto. Together, Sai sees his brother in Naruto and he finally smiles from the heart, only to be interuppted by the deviant, Orochimaru. Naruto tells Sai he will deal with Orochimaru while he goes after Sasuke. When Sakura and Yamato arrive to support Naruto, Orochimaru simply tells them he would rather go after Sai now and dissappears. Yamato shows Naruto and Sakura Sai's Bingo Book, with Sasuke's profile. Naruto initally refuses to believe Sai would try to kill Sasuke, but remembers what he told them when they first met; a smile can fool anyone, even if its fake.

As they search the compound, they hear a loud explosion and follow it leading them to Sai and Sasuke. Sasuke looks down at his former teammates with very little concern, as Sai explains his new intentions to help them bring Sasuke back. When Sasuke explains that bonds had made him weak, made him lose sight of his goal, which was to kill Itachi, Naruto questions why Sasuke didn't kill him at the Valley of the End in their last fight. Sasuke explains that he spared Naruto only on a whim, and it is b a whim that he's going to end Naruto at that moment. Sasuke then asked why someone who wishes to become Hokage would risk so much just to save one person. Naruto explained that if he couldn't even save one person, he shouldn't be Hokage. At that moment, Sai comes to block the blade from cutting into Naruto and a short fight begins with Sasuke having the clear upper hand. After getting hit with Sasuke's Chidori Current, Naruto's consciousness is sent to the sewer where he has another talk with the demon fox. This moment gives a sign of the seal weakening, as when first revealed the demon fox could barely get its claws through the gate [1], to now the demon fox could pull itself, even if its just its chakra a great deal out of its cage[2]. Naruto tells the demon fox that he doesn't want to see it's face anymore, and that he doesn't want to use the it's chakra. The demon fox mocks Naruto[3] and tells him that Naruto has always been running to it's aid when ever he was in a fight, but Naruto tells the demon fox that he doesn't need it anymore, just as Sasuke appears inside Naruto's mind. Sasuke simply says he could "see" the demon fox. The demon fox tells him and Naruto that Sasuke's eyes has power and chakra that is far more sinister than it's own, because his Sharingan reminded it of Madara Uchiha. When Sasuke suppresses the demon fox's chakra back into its cage, it then warns Sasuke not to kill Naruto, as he would live to regret it. [4]

It is also shown that Sasuke's defection still affects Naruto and Sakura, and when the whole of Team 7 (minus Kakashi) finally meets after two and a half years, Sasuke greets them, as he did when they became a team, with cold indifference, and says he doesn't care if he becomes Orochimaru's vessel as long as Itachi will die. He even attempts to kill Sakura and Naruto. Later, after Sasuke leaves with Orochimaru and Kabuto, Naruto and Sakura are clearly upset that he is no longer the Sasuke they knew.

After his "reunion" with Sasuke, and the realization that after all his special training he is no closer to saving Sasuke, Naruto sinks into a deep depression. His outlook is changed, however, when Kakashi tells him that he will train Naruto to create a unique jutsu that could possibly give him the strength to finally meet Sasuke on an even level. Finally receiving the one-on-one training with Kakashi that he has always desired, and with his last encounter with Sasuke driving him, Naruto becomes more serious and focused than he's ever been. During his training, Kakashi remarks that he believes Naruto will surpass the Fourth Hokage and later, even sees a vision of the Fourth Hokage around Naruto. Also, after Naruto shows off the results of his special training Kakashi admits to himself that Naruto has surpassed him.

Hidan and Kakuzu Arc

While continuing his training, Kakashi and Yamato began to explain to him elemental chakra. To further understand this, Naruto was sent to Asuma Sarutobi, who was skilled at the same wind chakra Naruto has. While training Naruto was given the deadline by Tsunade to master elemental chakra, or he would be unable to aid Team 10 and Kakashi deal with the two Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuzu.

Naruto and Yamato arrived to help Choji, Ino, and Kakashi battle Kakuzu, who so far has been revealed to be more than a match for the team. Naruto challanges Kakuzu himself and reveals his new jutsu, the Wind Release: Rasengan, and its special ability, the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken. After one failed attempt, Naruto managed to get behind Kakuzu, trapping him in the incredable vortex of wind, tearing Kakuzu apart. When Shikamaru arrived to tell them Hidan was delt with, they return to Konoha. Upon their return, Naruto needed to be hospitalized due to injuries to the arm he used the Rasenshuriken in. Tsunade told Kakashi that the Rasenshuriken caused cellular damage to cells in his arms which could render him unable to use chakra, and has since forbidden the use of the technique.

Hunt for Uchiha

Team Yamato would later be called into Tsunade's office where Jiraiya informed that Sasuke has killed Orochimaru. With joy, Naruto expects Sasuke to return to Konoha on his own, but Tsunade and Jiraiya tells him thats not the case. Naruto then asks Tsunade to form a team to hunt down Itachi for a single purpose; Sasuke is after Itachi, if Konoha captures Itachi, Sasuke would have no choice but return home. Tsunade assigns Team Yamato, Kakashi, and the members of Team 8; Hinata, Shino, and Kiba to hunt down Itachi.

While searching, Naruto, Yamato, and Hinata were found by Kabuto. Kabuto tells them how without Orochimaru, he was left without a leader and has since made a resolve to make himself stronger. But to achieve this, Kabuto implanted Orochimaru's remains into his own body. Kabuto left the group vowing he would return to kill Naruto once he takes care of Orchimaru's killer. After this, the 8-man squad heard and followed a large explosion and went to investigate. Kiba informed them that Sasuke was there at that explosion and he could follow his scent. Unfortunantly, Karin sensed them coming and attempted to lead them off the trail by using Sasuke's old clothes and scatter them in different directions. Naruto used his Shadow Clone Technique to follow the scents, only to find Itachi. Naruto attacked Itachi, who only wanted to talk. Itachi asked Naruto why he cared so much about Sasuke to which Naruto explained that Sasuke was like a brother to him and he would be a much better brother to him than he (Itachi) could ever be. To this response, Itachi gave a rare smile (possibly because of what he had already sacrificed to protect Sasuke). Naruto again tried to attack him but was quickly caught in his genjutsu. Once again regrouping with the squad, one of Naruto's shadow clones was destroyed when Sasuke plowed through it, once again leading them to Sasuke's trail. While still following Sasuke the squad runs into Tobi, who taunts them playfully until Naruto attempts to attack him with a Rasengan. Instead, Naruto phases straight through Tobi. He is then apart of the battle group as they tried several different formations to take down Tobi, but all failed, leaving Shino to use his clans secret techniques to handle him. Tobi retreats when he hears of Itachi's death. Naruto's team rushes to the battlefield, to find Sasuke's scent mixed with the scent of the Akatsuki, and none of them present.

It was later revealed by Itachi that he had transfered some of his power to Naruto before he died. It is suspected he did this because he anticipated Sasuke's attack on Konoha. To what extent these powers have been granted is unknown.

Post Hunt For Uchiha Arc

Upon returning to Konoha, Naruto recalls when he met with Itachi during the hunt. Itachi had transfered some of his power to Naruto before he died, and asked could Naruto kill Sasuke if he ever became a threat to the village. Before he could ponder this issue further, Kakashi, along with Gamabunta and Gamakichi, told Naruto that the Fifth needs him. When he arrived at the Hokage Residence, the full members of Team Yamato/Kakashi, several Toads, and Pa were waiting for him. There he was told that Jiraiya died in his battle with Pein. Grief stricken, Naruto blamed Tsunade for his death and departed. He spent the rest of the day mourning the loss of his teacher, musing over the fact he had wanted Jiraiya to be there when he became Hokage. Iruka comforted Naruto, telling him that Jiraiya had always been proud of him and what he had and would become.

Sage Arts Training

After trying to assist Shikamaru in deciphering Jiraiya's code, Naruto was dead set on destroying Pein. Pa offered to train Naruto in the sage arts, seeing as Naruto stood no chance of killing the apparent Akatsuki leader. Naruto readily accepted his offer. Then Naruto and Pa travelled to Myobokuzan through a reverse summon from Gamakichi. The sage arts is a way to make a ninja's chakra mixed together with nature, or the ground, atmosphere, and all the things that are related to nature. Pa demonstrated it to Naruto by lifting a giant statue, and Naruto has a hard time understanding about the sage arts.

Abilities

At the start of the series, the only jutsu Naruto could do without fail was the Sexy Technique,[5] a creative but almost completely useless diversionary technique used simply to shock his instructors. Though Naruto had trouble with the Clone Technique at the start of the series, he quickly learns how to use the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique and the smaller-scale Shadow Clone Technique, Jonin-level techniques, in both the first episode and chapter of the series. This particular ninjutsu grows to be his most-used technique, as it often serves as the basis for other moves. The Shadow Clone technique allows Naruto to create replicas of himself. Unlike the Clone technique, the replicas are physical beings rather than illusions, making them capable of attacking and intercepting blows, and even adding intensity to one's training. He even uses his Shadow Clones to "add" to his first jutsu to create the Harem Technique,[6] though it is still a fairly useless technique.

At the start of the series, Naruto primarily creates Shadow Clones for the purpose of taijutsu in terms of combat. Naruto also often creates Shadow Clones to act as decoys or for other deceptive tactics, such as diverting attention away from himself so that he may use the Transformation Technique unnoticed. Naruto makes more intelligent and better control of his clones as the series progresses. In his fight with Neji, for instance, Naruto dispersed several of his clones once one was hit, creating the illusion that Neji had hit the real Naruto.[7] Later in the series, Naruto would hide away while several clones attack, confusing the enemy when there was no Naruto remaining. During his fight with Gaara, Naruto even uses his clones as shields and platforms to bound off of in the air. By Naruto: Shippūden, Naruto's usage and timing of the technique has become more advanced. Various tactics he has shown include creating clones to push himself out of the way of an attack, transform into weapons, and fall for traps in his stead.

Naruto was also taught the Summoning Technique from Jiraiya which he could use against larger opponents. Naruto signed the toad contract, so like Jiraiya he can only summon toads. The type of toads he can summon is proportional to his chakra and skill, as when he started out he could only summon tadpoles. When he uses the demon fox's chakra, he was able to summon the toad boss Gamabunta. When he doesn't use the demon fox's chakra, he seems to have a hard time getting any specific toad as he summons Gamakichi or Gamatatsu. As the animals have minds of their own, Naruto has difficulty controlling them, meaning that they typically have to become motivated to fight on their own.

But Naruto's most useful offensive technique is the Rasengan, a jutsu his father invented. Unlike Jiraiya or Kakashi, Naruto has to use two hands to create the Rasengan, due to his lack of chakra control. However even with his two hands, he couldn't form a proper Rasengan sphere. It wasn't until his fight with Kabuto did Naruto use his own hand to create the shell, and used a shadow clone to spin the chakra creating a perfect Rasengan. When he is in his tailed transformations, he seems to have the ability to mold the chakra into a sphere using the demon fox's chakra alone. In Part II, Naruto showed off his own version of the Rasengan, a larger version simply called the Great Ball Rasengan, but would later go through element training and has since made his own version of the Rasengan. The Wind Release: Rasengan just like the standard is half complete, but Naruto has showed to use it quite well as he was able to create the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken.

In each movie, Naruto uses different variant of Rasengan. In Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow, the Seven-Colored Rasengan, which relied on the Spring Heat Generators, was used to defeat Doto Kazahana. In Naruto the Movie 2: Great Clash! The Illusionary Ruins at the Depths of the Earth, the Twin Rasengan, which relied on Temujin's Gelel chakra, and the Demon Fox Rasengan, which relied on Naruto's Shadow Clone, were used to defeat Haido. In Naruto the Movie 3: Great Excitement! The Animal Panic of Crescent Moon Island, the Crescent Moon Rasengan, which relied on the crescent moon's light, was used to defeat Ishidate. In Naruto: Shippūden the Movie, the Naruto-Shion Super Chakra Rasengan is combined chakra from Naruto and the priestess, Shion. Naruto also used the Twin Rasengan in Naruto: Shippūden the Movie against the Giant Stone Warriors.
