Greener Gadgets Competition

The third annual Greener Gadgets design competition was held in New York earlier this week.
First prize went to a gadget called Augmented Living Goods. It's a concept for a cellphone app to help people choose local and sustainably produced groceries.
A user would scan the barcode of an item in a shop, and their cellphone would then inform them where it came from and whether or not it is in season, and relate its price history and comments from others who have already bought it. It was designed by Shane Blomburg, John Healy, Seth Laupus and Andrew Reeves. The other entries can be seen here.

Clavilux 2000 Audio Visual Generator

Clavilux 2000 - Interactive instrument for generative music visualization from Jonas Heuer.

The Clavilux 2000 is an interactive instrument for generative music visualization, which is able to generate a live visualization of any music played on a digital piano. The setting of the installation consists of three parts: A digital piano with 88 keys and midi output, a computer running a vvvv patch and a vertical projection above the keyboard.

For every note played on the keyboard a new visual element appears in form of a stripe, which follows in its dimensions, position and speed the way the particular key was stroke. Colours give the viewer and listener an impression of the harmonic relations: Each key has it's own color scheme and "wrong" notes stand out in contrasting colors.
Furthermore the piano player can switch between the standard 2d view and an additional 3d view of the visualization while playing.

More of an advert for Epson really. It means donning a suit fitted with cables, power pack, PlayStation 3 - the slim one, of course - and an Epson projector so that you can play videogames wherever you want.

CES 2010

CES 2010 (Consumer Electronics Show) is upon us once more and as always, the tech is just getting better and better. Here are some of my fave previews:

Ultra-thin on-wall speaker Mythos XTR-50. The XTR-50 offers an alternative o chunky speakers next to your flatscreen. At just 38mm deep it can be wall-mounted alongside your telly.

O.R.B. It might look like nothing more than a ring at first glance, but this finger-worn device can sync with your mobile phone. It has a vibratory alert and a tiny screen that shows caller ID, text messages, and meeting reminders from your mobile. Flip it open and it converts into a headset.

ATI Radeon HD 5870. This super powerful graphics card is the first of the DirectX 11 generation, and is able to connect up to six high-definition displays for a full surround-visual experience.

Asus Ee Reader. The twin-screen book-like layout promises to break new ground in tablet computing territory.

OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display technology is likely to reach the 40-inch sized monitors from the Sony, Samsung and LG this year.

Bloxels

Designer Jinha Lee wondered what was possible if pixels escaped from the monitor and became physical objects, so he created Bloxels.
These small devices are a prototype for a new type of display system that Lee began working on while studying at the University of Tokyo.

The design uses a module-based approach, consisting of translucent cubes that emit a colorful glow according to the transmitted data from the neighbouring bloxels. the user can freely move the blocks around and the image will transform accordingly.

Digital Magazine Concept By Bonnier

A really well thought-out concept for what could be the future of magazine reading...digitally and using a touch screen tablet. Conceptualists, Bonnier have really taken the time to think things through and propose a very realistic idea.....

The Ultimate Gifts That We Wont Be Receiving

Every year, Bornrich do a great list of hardcore presents/gifts for rich people to give to each other and hot damn, I wouldn't mind receiving some of these things! But let's get realistic...I'm never going to receive them so instead, I present to you a small selection of the ridiculously priced gifts that I will never be able to afford...

Arkeg’s Drink ‘n’ Game is a gaming arcade loaded with the choicest games and a five-gallon keg to hold your handpicked thirst quencher. It’s a machine that features a fully functioning kegerator with room for a five-gallon keg kept cool by a solid-state thermoelectric cooling system. In addition, it sports a gaming-ready PC, pre-loaded with 69 games such as Asteroids, Mortal Kombat II and 1942. Other features include a 24-inch LCD with protective overlay, an authentic backlit marquee, a 2.1 sound system with powered sub, two complete arcade controllers, a trackball mounted in a custom aluminum panel and a side-mounted tap with interchangeable handle and more. BMW DesignworksUSA has decided to infuse some of BMW’s design principles to computer cases. Say hello to the BMW Computer Case targeted squarely at gamers who love cutting edge stuff. The BMW computer case makes sure that all the wires and game processors are enclosed in a sharp looking exterior case. This will let gamers indulge in their passion without the annoying wires and equipment creating an eyesore.

This gadget is an external speaker system for your bicycle. The Cy.Fi speaker is a handy little speaker that fits on your cycle’s handlebars and belts out all your favorite tunes, loud and clear, wirelessly. You can control volume and your song list from the speaker itself. To do this, it needs your iPod to transmit the music via Kleer, a much more efficient audio transmission technique compared with Bluetooth 2.0. The Kleer dongle for the iPod is included in the package, which costs $149.

The Athena Multimedia Sofa is a trendy upholstered sofa that has a couple of multimedia touchscreen computers at either end. These computers will do everything other regular computers do, in addition to beaming out satellite TV. All this, along with the Sofa’s luxurious upholstery makes it a compelling option for couch lovers. Only the very rich couch potatoes may be able to afford the Athena Multimedia Sofa, which sells at a shocking $15,436

Wall Of Sound iPod Speaker

The latest on the list of iPod gadgetry is the world’s biggest iPod speaker called “Wall of Sound” that weighs 102 kilos (225 pounds), stands almost a meter tall and 1.25 meters wide, and can pump up to 125 watts. Completely handmade, the wall is made up of 28 individual speakers, each housed in their own chamber, and it boasts its own tube amplifier hidden away inside. The monstrous wall speaker belittles the iPod dock on the side. It costs $4,500 and apparently, the first batch is already sold.

Portable NES Cartridge Console Mod

This old 8-bit NES cartridge was hacked up and converted in to a full working NES games console. The nesP as it’s called, was created using a noname china brand PMP that has the ability of playing NES ROMS. An old NES controller was then attached to the PMP and all fit snugly inside along with a small colour LCD screen.

It’s got 4gb built in memory, with a sd card slot in the inside so you could expand the memory if needed, and not only does it play nes games, but it also plays gameboy and gameboy color roms as well. 2.8” TFT LCD, built-in rechargeable lithium battery, Video player, MP3 player, FM radio, Picture viewer, Audio recorder, built in speaker, and the best part… TV-OUT !!! so you can play on the big screen!

The unit has 2 additional buttons on the front, ones power, and the other is used to navigate the main menu, basically it’s a ‘back’ button. And there is a small hole drilled in the back with a reset button behind it. The unit has 3 plug ins on the right side, AC power (to charge the battery) Mini USB (to put files on the thing) and the TV-OUT plug.

The sound is sped up in the video due to the mod using a PAL rom, and the system running it at the speed of a NTSC rom.

Cassette Tape Measure

The Cassette Tape Measure is another one of those ideas that makes you wonder why you didn’t think of it. Okay, maybe it’s not the most practical of applications, but it is pretty cool. I’ve no idea how long the tape is, as the only numeric value is 120 minutes. Not sure how that translates into inches. I do know that it will only take US$8 to get this strangely appealing tape measure. You can get it HERE. $8? Bargain!
