The amazing Russian Matryoshka dolls

31 renowned fashion designers around a single task: recreate the legendary Matryoshka dolls for the tenth anniversary celebration of the Russian Vogue. After an invitation from the magazine's editor in chief, Aliona Doletskaya - who, some say, is one of the few executives in the magazine who can be considered a human being - important names like Prada, Moschino, Saint Laurent, Armani, Dolce&Gabana, Oscar de La Renta, among others, explored a cutting-edge approach to the task, producing small, contemporary works of art, filled with a cultural connection between Russia's past and present.

Each brand produced a sketch, which were then handed over to some of the best craftsmen in the country and produced in wood, measuring 50 cm in height and 60 cm in diameter. The dolls were then hand-painted according to the drawings.

It was its quick popularity and wide spread that made the Matryoshka dolls one of Russia's most prevailing symbols. The first dolls are credited to Sergei Maliutin, dating back to 1890. Inspired by the Japanese wood dolls, he drew a project of one that would have typical clothes and appearance. They were eight small peasants that followed a concept already well known in the country, of hollow objects which contain similar ones inside in progressively smaller sizes (take the Fabergè eggs, for instance).

Those small objects travelled through an entire century, adapting themselves to historic demands - such as matryoshkas portraying leaders like Krushchev and Lenin, educational, decorative or commemorative demands, such as Russian Vogue's; this shows their the infinite ability to adapt themselves and the many interpretations they can have, remaining, at the same time, unchanged and never out of date. About the collection, Aliona Doletskaya said: each matryoshka is unique and a work of art in itself. Landmark, sculpture, work of art - you can call it whatever you like.

Phone Pics

I lost the cable that connects my phone to my laptop, but luckily for me, my phone is super out of date and my lady's flatmate had an old one that she dusted off to give me. Thanks Erin! One day this medium of camera will be super art fag and every gallery in town will want a piece, so without further or do, here is a selection of the best from my phone:

What did you do this weekend?

Went for a paint on Friday. Assome horror:

Had way too much to drink at Mango's then for a skate on Saturday down at Stockwell:

luckily my favourite band of all time were playing that very evening and I had 2 tickets:

Me and Selph, my friend Adam and his girlfriend Dani held it down till obnoxiously late. Adam fell off my skateboard and then we went home...

Sunday....work, boring and hungover a lot (big up Tizer, I'd still be there had you not).

Monday: Fell asleep waiting for my ladyfriend to get her crooked wizdom teeth taken out by students.......

Good times, mad props to everyone I hung out with especially Adam & Dani, J, the bald guy at the gig with the terror face and 18 hole Doc Martins, Eyehategod for making it into the country for the first time in I think 10 years, Tizer for helping me out on Sunday, and the lovely Steph for providing substantial amounts of horror today to finish off the perfect extended weekend.

Thinking about it actually all the rest is just gonna kind of suck from now on.

Ninja Assasin

I'm begining to think that Hollywood are getting their act together once again in terms of the action genre. For years I have slated the big wigs over in the states that have tailored their action films to kids and idiots, but finally I think we have passed the era of 'Batman and Robin' to a more entertaining selection of films to which this is no exception. I think we can all thank the recession for this, no money = more movie watching. The plot...

Raizo (Rain) is one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them...and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge. In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders. Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune), to silence her forever. Raizo saves Mika from her attackers, but he knows that the Clan will not rest until they are both eliminated. Now, entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse through the streets of Europe, Raizo and Mika must trust one another if they hope to survive...and finally bring down the elusive Ozunu Clan.Release Date: November 25, 2009

Hungarian Gypsies In Romania

They love to show off their wealth with gaudy and kitsch objects that just whiff of over the top-ness. Apparently, most of the houses are just beautiful shells, with no proper connection to electricity and running water. The family will live in a tinier house in the back garden and just use the main facade to 'show off'. Romanians don't like them too much and consider them to be lazy good-for-nothings who use taxpayers money to live off whilst they get on with dodgy business like drug dealing etc. I can't believe that they are all like that and am fascinated by these capitalistic ideas of wealth and fame.

Stockwell Skate Jam 09.

The 4th July marked the first summer jam at my local skatepark Brixton Beach. It's a legendary place within the London skate scene, and to celebrate the council deciding to re-vamp the place rather than knock it to the ground for council homes, a jam was held. Below is a rather boring vid, but loads of positivity and a lick of new paint features in it, and might I say what a rad painting was made, big up! Viva la Stockwell Park!

Until The Light Takes Us

Following on from the last post, Until The Light Takes Us is a new documentary featuring key founders of the Black Metal genre. Set to be released later on this year, fans of this music will not want to miss it. Featuring interviews with Varg Vikernes of the one man band Burzum, Gylve Nagell, Kejetil Haraldstad and film maker Harmony Korine, this feature presents interviews about the murders, arson, through a candid account of a sub-culture immersed in fact/fiction, myth and mystery that spiraled out of control. For the general release date and theatre showings near you, keep an eye on the official website for updates.

Harmony Korine Fanzine Re-Release

From the script writer of the cult classic 'Kids' and 'Gummo', comes a re-released version of the fanzines he and Mark Gonzales put together some years ago. Having been a fan of Korine since the release of Kids, I'm glad to see he's still producing (even if it is re-released old work). It is avaliable to pre-order through Drag City.

When I first saw Kids back in the 90's, it was like watching art imitating life (minus the gang violence and sex, I was never a massive hit with the ladies), I was blown away with what I saw. It was the raddest thing ever because there was nothing else like it at the time. The closest you could get to this kind of youth culture in Britain was to either live at southbank in London with the locals or read imported skate zines from the states. Nowerdays you've got it on tap via the internet/magazines/shops, there is no 'sub' to the culture any more and everyone has an understanding of it. However, due to the authenticity of Korine's script writing and creative approach, you can watch that film some 10 years on and still feel genuinely imersed by it's authenticity.

Although Korine's work is now widely avaliable and is well documented through trendy magazines and hipster companies, his films have not diluted in form or content as a result. They have retained a consistency and progression. His second and third features 'Gummo' and 'Julien Donkey Boy' show just this and have been praised by Gus Van-Saint and Werner Herzog.

Although I thought much less of his latest feature 'Mister Lonely', there is a definate progression and development from the previous that suggests that Korine has not lingered on the success of his previous work.

To judge for yourself, rent the films, or to get some more info on Korine you can visit some fan sites here and here.
